I often get asked the question by students, peers and friends, “what is jazz?” Each time I’m asked this question I get the sense that my answer needs to be so well defined that it will then be clear as to what “jazz” is and then from that definition people will understand what it is and accept because they have a definition of it.
I’ve thought about this a lot and over the years, have had numerous conversations with people about the topic, and have tried to define it myself. What is interesting is that people don’t need a definition of what classical music is or rock music. In fact, what does it even mean to ask to someone if they like rock or popular music?
Jazz needs to be accepted for what it is or what it is about instead of needing to be defined and confined.
